Situated at a distance of 13 kilometers northwest of Corfu Town, in front of the homonymous tourist resort, Dassia is a well-organised beach, sandy at its major part and with small pebbles at spots. Not to mention that the popular all over Greece, Corfiat Easter events featuring the famous philharmonics, are also taking place in the Old Town. Finally, it’s worth noting the fact that since 2007 the area belongs to the UNESCO’s list of cultural heritage.
Liston, a lively pedestrian street located in the Old Town Spianada square, is one of Corfu’s most beautiful and popular places for both locals and visitors. Its name derives from the Italian word ‘lista’ meaning straight and wide road for walking. Liston is considered ideal for promenade, a cup of coffee or meal. Liston was erected early 19th century, when the island was part of the French empire (1807 – 1814). With its characteristic curvilinear arches and lanterns, it combines French and pre-existing Venetian architectural elements in a unique way. Its present form was completed during British jurisdiction (1814 – 1864). Liston is the spot where philharmonic bands march during St. Spyridon’s processions four times a year. Among Easter customs, the traditional pot-throwing on Holy Saturday morning takes place here.
Kanoni with the astonishing view, it’s maybe the most recognisable sight, since it consist one of the most favourable places for the tourists who desire to take pictures of Corfu. Besides, for decades now, travelling reviews and promotional campaigns referred to the island, usually accompanied by a picture of this particular place. The area is located in the southern part of the old town. During antiquity, Kanoni used to be the main city and the port of Corfu. The temple of the ancient goddess Artemis is also located in the area. The region’s name means “canon” and comes from the canon the French battery placed there, back in 1798 and still remains until today. Kanoni consists a very popular destination even for the local residents, since here can someone enjoy a coffee by watching the amazing view of the Pontikonisi, the Vlachernas monastery and the sea lake, with a background the magical blue of the Ionian sea. He/she can also enjoy watching the airplanes’ landings and the take offs since the Corfu airport, I. Kapodistrias, is located in a relatively short distance.

The royal palace of Achillion with the neoclassical influence, the beautiful garden and stunning views, is a unique sight of architectural beauty that every visitor of Corfu has to see. The palace, which is located in Gastouri area, 10km south of Corfu town, was built in 1890 at the expense of the Queen of Austro-Hungarian Empire, Elizabeth (also known as “Sissy”) with the intention to use it as a place where she could deal with the loss of her young son. After Elizabeth’s assassination in Geneva in 1898 the palace remained closed until 1904 or 1907 where the German Emperor William II (also known as “Kaiser”) bought it. The palace’s interior is decorated with beautiful frescoes and there are also many interesting historical memorabilia and decorative elements of that era, while the ancient Greek influence is easily distinguishable in the garden, since the visitor can admire statues of Greek mythology such as the 9 Muses, Apollo, Hermes and the magnificent statues of Achilles as well. The combination of the neoclassical palace, built in a location with lush vegetation and unique view to a part of Corfu and the Ionian Sea, makes Achillion to be considered the most fascinating architectural structure of the island and one of the most beautiful royal palaces in Europe. Today, the palace belongs to the Greek state and consists one of the most important museums of Corfu.
